The Saturday Morning Children’s Club meets between 10.00 and 12.00. The children only pay £2 a week for tuition and not a penny more. There are no charges for costumes, rehearsals or performances. The theatre bears all running costs as well as providing costumes, scenery and rehearsal time. Each of the adult supervisors are fully DBS checked. One Children’s production had specifically designed and made costumes and scenery costing more than the Box Office takings. The difference came from sponsorship.
Children have written, produced and staged their own acclaimed productions. The objective of our registered charity is “to educate young people in the appreciation of Theatre and the Arts”. Children are given the opportunity to use their imagination, make friends and have an interest that keeps them off the streets whilst boosting their self-confidence.
No child is turned away and a number of special needs children have passed through the Club. Every child has the opportunity of appearing on stage and the main parts are not always reserved for the best actors. A number of former Club members are now volunteers and some have gained jobs because of their voluntary work.
The Club is all-inclusive and helps develop confidence and self esteem and integrates children into society. They mix with their peers in a safe environment. They learn discipline, thought for others, team working and reliability. Some of the children come from deprived backgrounds and for them this is something that they can be good at.
It is an environment where they are equals and their diverse upbringings can be expressed and appreciated. Children from local schools which include Welsh Medium and RC, primary and secondary, come together and long-term friendships are forged. Improving the reading, writing, confidence and presentation skills of the children has increased their employment opportunities and access to further education.
